Peking Restaurant, Columbia, MO Review

Peking Restaurant is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Columbia.

I've never had anything bad there. You know how, with most Chinese restaurants, hell, with any restaurants, there's always something on the menu that's not so great? Like, the egg rolls are good, but the hot and sour soup is bad? Not so with Peking. Great egg rolls. Great soup. Great crab rangoon. Great entrees.

Come back to me, Chick-Fil-A

Come back to Columbia, Chick-Fil-A.

Come back to me.

I have a rule about not talking about my employer on this blog, but when the University of Missouri decided that Chick-Fil-A would not be part of its plans for the new student union, I was crushed.

Forlorn.

The only Chick-Fil-A in town was going away.

I'm convinced!!!

I used to think that Tea Partiers were crazy and misinformed. But after watching this video I realized how wrong I was!!!

It was disturbing enough to hear about the "socialist agenda," but when I heard that Obama was going to ban fishing, I was ready to get my torch and pitchfork!!!

The Tea Party Wants to Kill Your Child

Hyperbole? Maybe. But consider this scenario.

When your child is born, you learn he has major congenital defects for which there are no known causes.

He needs surgeries. Long-term care. Eventually, perhaps, a transplant.

He has the surgeries, but the long-term care is still required. Medications. Your insurance pays, but even so, your savings dwindle.

Then you learn your employer-provided care has a lifetime limit, and your son, only a few years into life, has reached his limit.

Your child is no longer covered.

And your child now needs a transplant.

The lowdown on the KFC Double Down

Look, if you ever did the male, non-"good fat" version of the low-carb diet, then the KFC Double Down is no big deal.

When I lived in Chicago, I went low carb for a while.

Every morning I ate the insides of two McDonald's sausage burritos and threw away the tortillas.

At lunch I ate either two Taco Bell taco supremes and the insides of two meximelts, or a McDonald's crispy bacon ranch salad and a double cheeseburger sans bun.

I didn't exercise much.

I lost 30 pounds.

A friend of mine was doing low carb but loved nachos. What to do? He substituted bacon for tortilla chips.

So I see an ad for an all-meat sandwich and a bunch of Internet nannies getting up in arms about it, well, I gotta go get me one.

Bumperstickerisms (Updated)

God bless Harlan Ellison.

He's funny, brilliant, and damn right to fight for pay for his and other writers' work.

If you're a writer, it's very easy to watch this clip and get irate about suits at corporate megaconglomerates trying to get writers to work for free.

But it's just wrongheaded to take that message and apply it to a tiny, fledgling publication put out not by suits but by writers just trying to do something cool.

Hey, if they ask you, it's certainly okay to suggest they find a way to pay writers whose work is accepted. If you know of business models that have worked elsewhere, pass them along. That's great.

But don't say, "I dunno where the revenue comes from. Elves. Advertising. Unicorn shit. I don't care. I'm not a businessman. I'm a writer."

Fight the power! Down with The Man, man!

Horseshit.

Andrew Breitbart accuses congressmen of "provocative blackness" (Updated)

Andrew Breitbart is outraged that the Congressional Black Caucus would dare walk through the front door of the U.S. Capitol, rather than take the back door like good Negroes.

BREITBART: The very act of the Black Congressional Caucus, walking through the tea party people while holding all those videos was an act of provocation. They need this desperately and one last thing. The language that Nancy Pelosi is using about the civil rights movement, comparing the unpopular health care bill to the civil rights movement ties into this… They’re all on the talking points, basically telling black people that the white people are trying to take your health care from you. This is a racial, racist, racially divisive strategy that they’re playing that’s very dangerous in the United States.

I mean, how dare they? Don't those Negroes know that walking through a crowd of frothing-at-the-mouth white people while being black is just plain provocative? That's like waving a red cape at a bull!

I grew up in Birmingham. I know all about crap like this.

Rosa Parks was being "provocative" when she refused to go to the back of the bus.

Other African Americans were being "provocative" by daring to ask that they be served at the same lunch counter as white people.

I guess those three little girls at the 16th Street Baptist Church were being "provocative" by daring to let themselves be blown up by murderous bigots.

Yes, there are some African Americans who have exploited the hard and sincere work of others. As I said, I grew up in Birmingham. I've seen it all.

But congressmen walking through the front door of the Capitol to do their jobs?

No.

According to this article, Rep. Heath Shuler, who is white, confirmed the statements of his African American colleagues that some tea partiers hurled racial epithets.

I guess Shuler must have gotten too much black on him when he was playing football.

Eat a hot bowl of dicks, Andrew Breitbart.

(Thanks to Crooks and Liars for the quote.)

UPDATE: Well so the latest is that Heath Shuler says he was not with the members of the Congressional Black Caucus and thus did not personally hear the N-Word. According to the article, he did, however, hear epithets shouted at Barney Frank, which apparently is not very interesting or somehow okay, since there's actual video proof and thus no further opportunity for arguments from ignorance.

This is all tangential to the point of my original post about Andrew Breitbart condemning the Congressional Black Caucus for "walking while black."

If you're a member of the United States Congress, and you're about to vote on a bill and proud to do so, you have every right to walk through the front door of the U.S. Capitol.

Even if you're black.

So, Andrew: Eat. Bowl. Dicks.

A voice from long ago

Sadly all too relevant today.

"There are those in our own country too who today speak of the 'protection of country' -- of 'survival.' A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient -- to look the other way.

"Well, the answer to that is, 'Survival as what?' A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult.

"Before the people of the world, let it now be noted that here, in our decision, this is what we stand for: justice, truth, and the value of a single human being."

Pope Benedict is a monster, and so are YOU.

--that is, if you are Catholic and are not out in the street demanding his removal along with his enablers.

You are a monster because you are complicit in preserving an institution that--at best--looked the other way while hundreds of priests molested thousands of children across the world. At worst, it not only allowed these horrors to continue but acted to obstruct criminal investigations.

And who was officially responsible for these obstructions? Who allowed these abuses to continue?

Joseph Ratzinger, aka Pope Benedict.

Young children.

Young deaf children.

Children the world over.

I can barely contain my rage as I write these words.

I have listened and read the comments of Catholics who make excuse after excuse for these depraved individuals. I was listening on NPR the other day and almost drove off the road I was so furious.

I grew up Catholic. My family is Catholic. I know many well-intentioned, good-hearted Catholics. But that only increases my fury.

Despite your claims to the contrary, despite your ability to throw yourself onto the street when it comes to abortion, you can't muster empathy for the thousands of children who suffered at the hands of these grotesque individuals.

You are incapable of empathy for fellow humans.

Because we all know, if it were YOU, if it were YOUR child, it would be a different story.

THOUSANDS of children were sodomized by priests.

THOUSANDS of children were forced to submit to sexual acts by priests.

Under the auspices of the goddamn Catholic Church.

Which then covered up for the priests.

Shuffled them around so they could keep molesting.

Prevented investigators from gathering evidence.

This is not "gossip." This is documented FACT.

Think about it. Imagine it. Let it sink into your thick fucking skull. Think about those priests and what they did. Think about the children and what it must have been like for them.

Can you imagine it? Yes?

And yet you'll walk through those doors again while that despicable man still leads your institution?

We all make excuses for institutions we hold dear. Women's organizations excused Bill Clinton playing "hide the cigar" with his intern. After decades of decrying out-of-wedlock births, every attendee at the Republican National Convention stood and cheered Sarah Palin's unwed pregnant teenage daughter.

This is another order entirely.

Don't speak to me of "the church being more than the pope."

If your children's school principal had known about teachers molesting children, had not instantly acted to remove them, and had obstructed criminal investigations, would you say, "Oh, the school is more than the principal," and speak of moving forward, the principal still in place?

Sick.

YOU are sick if you would walk into a Catholic church again before these vile, depraved monsters are removed from their positions.

CLEAN. YOUR. HOUSE.

UPDATE: And that means you, Bill Donohue, you and your execrable Catholic League. Funny how you can get so redfaced and hotheaded about a little paintings in a museum somewhere, but when helpless children the world over are molested by depraved pedophile priests and your "infallible" Papi covers it up, all you can do is make excuses. If there's a hell, there'll be a special place in it for you and your ilk.

Sarah Palin pens YA Christian adventure novels

No. Just no.

From the AP:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has signed a seven-figure deal with HarperCollins Publishers to author a series of young-adult, Christian-themed adventure novels.

"The Rogue Warrior" series will follow an Indiana Jones/Lara Croft character as she uncovers historical documents and relics revealing Biblical truths and the Christian origins of the United States.

In the first book, expected to be released this fall, the heroine races to locate Noah's Ark before a group of atheist scientists can destroy it. In the second book, the character uncovers a centuries-old conspiracy by series villains Agents of Satan to convince Americans that the Founding Fathers supported separation of church and state.

In future volumes, the character will face off against Muslim terrorists, homosexuals, an array of minorities, and "left-coast elitists."

"HarperCollins was thrilled to publish Governor Palin's bestselling memoir, "Going Rogue,"" said HarperCollins worldwide CEO Brian Murray. "We are just as thrilled to add her to our literary ranks, which includes the likes of Mark Twain, the Brontë sisters, and Charles Dickens. We think this series has the potential to be another "Left Behind.""

Twentieth Century Fox has acquired the film rights to the series, and executives are said to be planning the "mother of all cross-marketing" with its sister company Fox News Channel, where the erstwhile vice presidential nominee hosts "Real American Stories." HarperCollins, Twentieth Century Fox, and Fox News Channel are all subsidiaries of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

In a prepared statement, Palin said she hoped that the series would be a way for young people to hear her message about the "real America."

"We've gotten away from our core values," Palin wrote. "We've been tricked by Hollywood Jews into thinking that you can escape the flames of hell if you don't accept Jesus Christ as your savior. There are actually places in this country where homosexuals and foreigners walk freely on our streets, unashamed. And worst of all, we've somehow forgotten that you must never trust the shifty Negro."

Lynn Vincent, ghostwriter of the Palin memoir "Going Rogue," is expected to assist Palin on the series, since the half-term former governor can't write a fucking sentence to save her fucking life.
